Helping to simplify Year 1 phonics assessment ahead of the Government’s 2012 compulsory test, Prime Principle Ltd, creators of the award-winning interactive markbook, Classroom Monitor, have partnered with Mr Thorne Does Phonics (www.mrthorne.com). At the click of a button, over 1500 Classroom Monitor primary schools can now link Key Stage 1 pupil assessment data to over 200 free phonics videos and resources. This will enable teachers to set phonics-related tasks for pupils which directly correspond with their identified areas for improvement.
Created by Year 1 teacher and ex-Lead Phonics Teacher for Solihull Local Authority, Christopher Thorne, the phonics resources have received widespread acclaim from the UK’s teaching profession, achieving over two million YouTube hits to date!
Christopher Thorne, founder and owner of Mr Thorne Does Phonics, comments: “I developed my phonics resources to have universal application and appeal; to be used by teachers, students and parents, in the classroom and at home. Linking them to Classroom Monitor’s online markbook will help teachers monitor and track their pupils’ progress and set targets more easily so they can spend more time teaching and less time on paperwork!”
This partnership marks another significant step in Classroom Monitor’s drive to raise standards through greater parental involvement in learning. Echoing the Government’s bid to provide information to every parent about their child’s achievements, as set out in the Importance of Teaching whitepaper, Classroom Monitor’s new Parental Access Portal enables teachers to share details of a child’s ongoing assessment with parents online, helping to bridge the communication gap between parents, schools and children.
Chris Scarth, Commercial Director at Prime Principle, comments: “Unanimous feedback from schools to date has been the fundamental need to link assessment information to quality advice and resources, to help both teachers and parents support children’s learning more effectively. Our partnership with Mr Thorne Does Phonics is the next step in our commitment to simplifying assessment processes for busy teachers. Christopher Thorne’s approach to phonics is refreshing and engaging for pupils and teachers alike and we are delighted to work in partnership with him.”
