Teachers at Bishop Bronescombe School in St Austell, Cornwall are now able to constantly monitor pupils’ progress while reducing their amount of paperwork, thanks to the new ‘Classroom Monitor’ (www.classroommonitor.co.uk) assessment software.  Designed to relieve the burden of paper-based reporting, teachers at Bishop Bronescombe are able to constantly track, assess and record the progress each child at the school has made.

The school chose the technology to make reporting vastly easier for teachers to manage and view, thus alleviating time that was previously spent on the paperwork involved in recording the development of each pupil. With 292 pupils aged 4-11, teachers at Bishop Bronescombe are now able to constantly assess and record children’s progress online on an on-going basis, throughout the academic year. Classroom Monitor is designed to relieve the burden of paper-based reporting and assessment for teaching staff and proven to save as much as 50% of time spent on reporting, Bishop Bronescombe staff now have significantly more time to devote to pupils in the classroom.

Assistant Head Teacher Stewart Gynn commented: “Classroom Monitor is a really efficient way for teachers to record their pupil’s achievements consistently as and when assessments are made. It provides us with a very clear overview of achievement for each pupil, class, year group and the entire school. Classroom Monitor provides effective support to all managers to ensure that our pupils here at Bishop Bronescombe are making the right rate of progress in their learning. Teachers use Classroom Monitor to ensure they are covering the curriculum appropriately. As we have recently moved to a ‘Theme’ based curriculum, teachers are now able to use Classroom Monitor at the planning stages to ensure that all areas of the curriculum are being covered in class.”

Classroom Monitor allows teachers to quickly and easily input data for each pupil’s progress in meeting certain competencies and highlights where additional support is required. At a glance, teachers, senior staff and governors can gauge how well pupils are performing and for Ofsted purposes, the school can be easily evaluated to ascertain areas of excellence and where additional attention is necessary.

The Government has specified that by 2012, all primary schools are to provide real-time reporting to parents, keeping them informed about their child’s achievement and progress. As a school which offers its pupils an ICT rich learning experience, Bishop Bronescombe is already meeting this target three years ahead of schedule with the implementation of Classroom Monitor.

Chris Scarth, Director at Prime Principle, commented: “Everyday, teachers are faced with a demanding level of paperwork to complete. Bishop Bronescombe’s efforts to make reporting and assessment pain-free and more importantly useful to teaching staff, ensures that pupils are guaranteed the best level of education available and properly personalised to their individual needs.”
