Alpha Micro Components, a leading international distributor of electronic components, today announces it has added u-blox' AMY-5M to its portfolio of GPS components. The new AMY-5M is the GPS industry's smallest standalone receiver currently available on the market. AMY-5M is miniature in size (6.5 x 8 x 1.2mm) and allows integration into the smallest portable devices. The fully tested ROM-based solution features the high performance 50 channel u-blox 5 positioning engine and has been developed for easy design implementation. The module also works as a standalone device which can operate at 1.8V or 3V, and does not require host integration or additional components to function.
Designed to withstand a temperature range of -40˚C up to +85˚C, the receiver integrates a standard crystal, which brings very fast acquisition and tracking performance at an economical price. Furthermore, AMY-5M handles u-blox' Assisted GPS (AssistNow-Online and AssistNow-Offline) providing even better startup and tracking performance under weak signal conditions. AMY-5M can be assembled on a 2-layer PCB, which leads to additional cost savings.
Huub Robroek, Area Sales Manager, u-blox comments: "GPS used to be perceived as an added extra, especially in the consumer device market, however more and more it is being seen as a given feature in automotive design and most handheld devices. We offer industry-leading receivers that meet our customers' needs in further developing applications where reliable positioning is expected.
This can now be extended to those manufacturers that might be looking to enhance their products by endowing it with affordable, high-performance positioning functionality."
"We welcome the AMY-5M to our distribution offering as a strategic addition to our components portfolio. The miniaturised product market is constantly developing and this component from u-blox allows to address the growing demands for GPS enabled portable equipment. The AMY-5M module compliments our existing portfolio of miniaturised GSM devices and antenna solutions and will be well received by our customers" comments Christos Papakyriacou, managing director, Alpha Micro Components.
